Waconia, Minn. - The Polars Men's Golf team hosted the President's Cup on Tuesday against North Central. The President's Cup is a one day scrimmage with points up for grabs every six holes. The team with the most points at the end of the Cup takes home the trophy and will hold onto it until next year.
After losing the President's Cup a year ago, the Polars took the Cup back from the Rams on Tuesday. Four golfers from each team contributed for the scoring. For the Polars, it was
Adam Thomas and
Lucas Jorgenson paired up against North Central's best two golfers, and
Ryan Kardell and
Nathan Halseth against the next best two golfers from the Rams. The scoring format included six holes of 2-person best ball, where the best score from each team is taken to give that team one point each hole (match play), and the winning team gets one point after six holes. The next six holes were 2-person alternate shot (winning team gets one point), and the last six holes were 1-on-1 match play, where one Polars golfer is trying to win each hole against one Rams golfer. Two one-on-one match play points are up for grabs in each group, so each group is playing for four points with eight points total up for grabs.Â
Kardell and Halseth teed off first for the Polars. They lost the first six holes, dropping an early point, but tied the Rams in alternate shot to get a half a point and fall down .5 to 1.5. Halseth dominated his one-on-one match play to tie the Rams in points at 1.5. Kardell had an impressive last three holes to come back and steal a point from the Rams. Kardell and Halseth finished with 2.5 points, winning their group 2.5 to 1.5. Thomas and Jorgenson also lost the first six holes and tied the second six holes, falling down .5 to 1.5 heading into the exciting and pressure filled one-on-one match play. Thomas won his match, and Jorgenson tied his, giving the Polars another 1.5 points, and 2 total points in the round. This gave the Polars 4.5 points to the Rams 3.5 points, giving the Polars an impressive and exciting win.Â
The Men's and Women's golf teams compete Thursday through Saturday in the three day UMAC Championship at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, Minn.
