Box Score St. Bonifacius, Minn. – The Crown men's soccer team was dealt a tough blow on Tuesday night, losing 3-2 in double overtime to conference for Northwestern. The Eagles scored the golden goal with less than four minutes remaining before full time.
Ger Jones got started on a neatly worked move off a short corner, connecting with
Josiah Steinkamp for the game's opening goal. Crown would take that 1-0 advantage into the break.
Justin Lao made a pair of top class saves, denying the Eagles in spectacular fashion in the first half and again in the second half, maintaining Crown's slim margin.
The Storm had a couple of great chances to extend their lead on the break with Northwestern pressing forward, but lacked the final quality necessary to go up 2-0.
Northwestern was able to claw back into the game with a goal in the 69
th minute to knot things up at a goal apiece. The visitors then jumped into the lead with just under 10 minutes remaining after Lao couldn't quite corral a bouncing effort in front of goal and Eric Fast knocked in the rebound, despite looking to be offside on the initial shot.
Crown's prospects looked bleak when the Eagle's keeper made a second huge mistake in the game, scuffing a clearance near the top of the box which fell to Jones. The man who netted Crown's opener took a deft touch to get the ball onto his right foot and then curled one past the keeper to tie things at 2-2.
The game continued to be a wide open affair in both overtime periods before the Eagles were able to get the winner on a nice strike from senior Joshua Fryc.
The Storm were hard done not to get anything from such a tough performance, but will have little time to dwell on the loss, as they host UW-Superior in another UMAC clash on Saturday.
