Football Beats Northwestern on Homecoming

St. Bonifacius, Minn. - Polars win 22-3 against UMAC rivals from the University of Northwestern on homecoming.

The Polars got the ball to start the game and took nearly eight minutes of possession on a long drive that ended in a touchdown on a six yard touchdown run by Quarterback Jamarrius Courtney. The Polars would force a three and out on the next drive, but punt it right back to Northwestern as they turn that into points on a 33-yard field goal. This would make the score 6-3 Polars early in the second quarter. Punts with a UNW missed field goal results in a long scoring drought between both teams, but with under three minutes remaining in the half the Polars find the endzone on a 14-yard touchdown pass by Jamarrius Courtney to Christian Lloyd. This would be the last score of the half as the Polars take a 13-3 lead into halftime.

The third quarter started with an Eagles punt, followed by a Polars turnover on downs. Northwestern would then sustain a long drive lasting nearly the rest of the third quarter, but the Eagles came up empty on a missed field goal. The score was still 13-3 Polars to start the fourth quarter as Chris Cardona kicks a field goal with just over ten minutes to play to bring the score to 16-3. Back to back big plays from the Eagles on their next drive put them inside the Polars 25 with another good opportunity to score, but Eddie Hallowanger came up with a huge interception inside the Polars five yard-line to stop the threat and keep the Eagles down by two scores. On the next drive, on a big third down and one deep in Polars territory, Jamarrius Courtney finds a hole and breaks away on a 76-yard touchdown run to put the Polars up 22-3 with under seven minutes to play. Eddie Hallowanger comes up with another interception on the next possession which would eventually set up the Polars to kneel out the time, sealing the deal on a big win over Northwestern.

Polars had numerous notable stat lines from today. Jamarrius Courtney again gets it done on the ground, rushing for 163 yards and 2 touchdowns. His passing game also improved, completing 11 passes for 73 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. Christian Lloyd caught the touchdown pass from Courtney as well. On the defensive side of the ball, Eddie Hallowanger's two interceptions stick out for their importance late in the game. Jakalyn Roy also filled up the stat sheet as he led the team with ten total tackles and two sacks. On special teams, Chris Cardona made a 33-yard field goal, and Reichen Hoekstra averaged 41 yards a punt with a long of 55 yards.

The Polars travel to New Ulm next Saturday for a 1:00pm game at Martin Luther College.
