New Ulm, Minn. - A valiant second-half comeback effort by the Crown College football team came up just one possession short on Saturday afternoon, as the Polars rallied from a 30-point deficit before falling 37-29 to Martin Luther College at the MLC Bowl.
Martin Luther stormed out of the gates early, building a 27-0 advantage in the opening quarter behind three passing touchdowns from Brady Turriff and a short rushing score by Arthur Robinson. The Knights extended their cushion to 30-0 midway through the second quarter on a 38-yard field goal by Gabriel Nottling.
Crown refused to go away quietly, finding its offensive rhythm late in the second period. Quarterback Zach Brown engineered a 7-play, 75-yard drive, connecting with Michael Sarych on a 26-yard touchdown pass to put Crown on the board and cut the deficit to 30-7 heading into the locker room.
The Polars carried that momentum straight into the second half, dominating the final two quarters of play. On Crown's second possession of the third quarter, Brown converted a fourth down with a 30-yard scoring strike to Jakhari Jones. After Martin Luther answered with a touchdown pass to stretch the lead to 37-13, the Polars struck right back with a four-play, 75-yard drive highlighted by a 49-yard reception from Isaiah Legate and capped by a 21-yard touchdown run from Brown. A successful two-point pass to Legate made it a 37-21 contest entering the fourth quarter.
Crown's defense stepped up in the final period, shutting out the Knights and creating multiple opportunities for the offense. With under six minutes remaining, Brown guided an 11-play, 96-yard scoring drive, finding Legate for a 31-yard touchdown pass before Rox Reiman rushed in the two-point conversion to bring the Polars within eight points at 37-29. Crown forced a quick punt on the ensuing drive, but the Knights' defense managed to halt Crown's final comeback attempts to secure the victory.
Brown paced the Crown offense, accounting for four total touchdowns by throwing for 226 yards and three scores while rushing for 44 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Legate delivered a standout performance through the air, hauling in four catches for a team-high 107 yards and a touchdown, while Sarych added five receptions for 100 yards and a score. Jones contributed 51 rushing yards on two carries alongside his 30-yard touchdown catch.
Defensively, Jakayln Roy anchored the Polars with nine total tackles, including eight solo stops, 4.0 tackles for loss, and one sack. Eddie Hallowanger matched him with nine solo tackles and two pass breakups, while Brian Amune Jr. added seven tackles and a pass breakup.
Crown held a significant advantage on the ground, rushing for 121 net yards on 32 attempts compared to Martin Luther's 71 yards on 37 carries. The Polars outscored the Knights 29-7 over the final 34 minutes of regulation and finished with 386 total yards of offense.
Crown (2-5, 1-3 UMAC) will look to bounce back next weekend as the Polars return home to St. Bonifacius to host Upper Midwest Athletic Conference rival University of Northwestern (Minn.) on Saturday, October 31, with kickoff slated for 1:00 PM.
