Courtney, Defense Shine as Polars Win Fourth Straight

Box Score

St. Bonifacius, Minn. – The Polars remained unbeaten in conference play on Saturday as they beat Westminster 19–6. Quarterback Jamarrius Courtney and head coach Anthony Franz have already helped the Polars reach their most wins in a season under Franz, and the team now has four victories in a single season for the first time since 2015.

The Polars turned the Blue Jays over on downs to start the game and capitalized, as Courtney found tight end Austin Droeger for a 13-yard touchdown. This was the only score in the first quarter, putting the Polars up 6–0 heading into the second. Westminster found the end zone early in the quarter to even the score at 6–6. Both defenses dominated the rest of the half, as the teams combined for 11 punts and three turnovers on downs. The Polars allowed just 110 yards of total offense in the first half as they worked to get their potent running game going.

Early in the second half, Courtney finally found room to run, breaking free for a 70-yard touchdown to break the 6–6 tie and put the Polars up 13–6. Later in the third quarter, Crown put together a long, methodical drive, taking more than six minutes off the clock. The drive carried into the fourth quarter and ended with another hard-nosed touchdown run by Courtney, who powered across the goal line from three yards out. With the score at 19–6 late in the fourth, senior linebacker Luke Johnson intercepted his second pass of the season to seal the win for the Polars and preserve their unbeaten conference record.

Courtney continued to dominate, rushing for 142 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 6.5 yards per carry. His 848 rushing yards this season rank second in all of Division III, and his 9.02 yards per carry lead the nation. He also threw for 77 yards and a touchdown on seven completions. Droeger caught that touchdown pass, while Turner Humphrey led the team in receiving with 40 yards on two receptions.

Defensively, Rudy Criner paced the Polars with nine total tackles, while Nathan Tomlinson added eight. Johnson filled up the stat sheet with half a sack, five tackles, and an interception. Jakalyn Roy led the pass rush with 1.5 sacks, while Chabon Tovar and Keivon Davis each added one. On special teams, Reichen Hoekstra punted 10 times for 294 yards, including a long of 43, and Criner returned a punt for 24 yards. Crown's defense currently ranks first in the UMAC in rushing yards allowed, total yards allowed, and total yards allowed per game. They have also surrendered the fewest touchdowns and points in the conference.

The Polars travel to St. Paul next Saturday to face Northwestern (Minn.) at 7:00 p.m. They return home on Saturday, November 8, to host Martin Luther College on Senior Day at 1:00 p.m. for their final home game of the season.
