Indianola, Iowa – The Polars football team hit the road on Saturday to take on Simpson College Storm and fell by a score of 45-7.
After Crown won the toss and elected to defer to the second half the Storm from Simpson drove the down the field and scored an opening drive touchdown to take the 7-0 lead. The first drive of the day for Crown started with some life as they marched out near midfield but sputtered out ending in a punt. The Polars defense shut down the Simpson offense near the end of the first quarter getting Crown the ball back near the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter opened with an 11-play drive that was capped off with a 3-yard touchdown pass from freshman
Zach Brown to
Seth Medina to even the score at 7-7. Simpson proceeded to march down the field before the drive ended with an interception in the end zone from
Rudy Criner, his second of the season and 9th of his career. After a few punts the Polars had possession with less than a minute remaining and turned the ball over with an interception and the Storm converted to take the 14-7 lead at halftime.
The Polars had a six-play drive to start the second half that finished with a punt.
Millicent Grear first interception after a deflection on a screen play. Simpson proceeded to score 31 unanswered points to close out the contest as the final score read 45-7 in favor of Simpson College.
Zach Brown went 20-35 in the contest and totaled 180 passing yards with 1 passing touchdown.
Chris Nigh carried the ball 17 times for a total of 49 yards on the ground.
Jakari Hunnecook led the Polars receivers with 8 catches for 55 receiving yards.
Michael Downs caught 2 passes for 42 receiving yards.
Seth Medina caught the lone touchdown.
Rudy Criner and
Luke Johnson led the Polars defense with 9 total tackles each. Criner added an interception and 6 solo tackles.
Gabe Banks totaled 5 tackles.
Marcus Grier highlighted the Polars return team with an average of 27.5 yards per return.
The Polars will return home to face St. Scholastica for homecoming next Saturday, September 21st for a 7pm contest.
