Mankato, Minn. - Polars men's soccer hit the road on Wednesday for the UMAC Semifinal with a spot in the UMAC Championship on the line and after two overtimes lost in a penalty kick shootout.
The first half saw a very even effort as both teams had just a few shots. A foul inside the 18-yard box in the 21st minute gave the Polars an excellent opportunity to score the first goal of the evening and Serni Batalla drove it into the back of the net and Crown took the 1-0 lead. The Polars held the lead going into the half.
Just two minutes into the second half Timmy Jackson scored his 13th goal of the season after an excellent spin, sending one in to take the 2-0 lead. After another twenty minutes of play the Vikings answered back to cut the Crown lead to 2-1 in the 65th minute. With just 22 seconds remaining Bethany Lutheran found the equalizer 2-2. A late yellow card gave Crown a set piece with just 11 seconds and the score stayed even.
After two grueling ten-minute overtime periods and multiple close shots for both teams, the fatigue started to set in and neither team was able to capitalize. After the two overtime periods concluded the contest then went to penalty kicks to decide who advances.
Five kicks from each team started with the first shot going in for the Vikings. Jose Lovera had his first shot saved. Leo Roque followed the next one up with a save of his own. Pedro Silveira evened it up sending on into the net.
The Vikings led in the penalty kicks 2-1, then Serni Batalla evened it up with two each. Bethany Lutheran connected once more then saved a shot from Crown giving the Vikings the 3-2 advantage. With the match on the line, the fifth shot saw the Vikings close out the contest.
The Polars move to 10-10-1 on the season and will play in the NCCAA Regional tournament next week at home.
