Box Score 4 St. Bonifacius, Minn. – Welcome to the live updates from Crown Softball's 2015 Spring Break trip to Arizona. The team will play 12 games in six days all against non-conference opponents as they look to build up to the 2015 UMAC season. Game updates will be posted here in order as they go final.
Arizona Christian – Stepping off the plane at midnight the night before, the girls were thrust into immediate action against Arizona Christian in Phoenix, Arizona. An NAIA member, the Firestorm took advantage of great pitching and some untimely Crown errors to sweep Crown 13-3 in game one and 5-1 in game two.
Game one was broken open in the second inning as a couple of errors and wild pitches led to a seven run inning for Arizona Christian. Crown rallied a bit in the fourth scoring three runs highlighted by a two RBI single by
Kate McLaughlin to narrow the score to 7-3. The Firestorm would tack on two runs in the bottom of the fourth and four more in the bottom of the fifth to close the game 13-3. Freshmen
Marissa Becerra and
Cassidy Valenzuela also collected hits for Crown who was held to three hits on the game.
Sarah Petkau pitched in the loss.
Game two was a defensive battle as both teams struggled to score. Crown was held to only two hits, but one of them was a home run by freshman
Sofia Palacios for Crown's only run.
Carissa Beers pitched six strong innings giving up eleven hits but only five runs as Crown's defense limited their errors in this game.
Baldwin Wallace - Crown was held to two hits in this game as they played a rematch of a tough opponent from last year in Tuscon, Arizona. Baldwin Wallace collected seven hits and was aided by an error from Crown and three wild pitches as they coasted to a 9-0 win over Crown.
Sofia Palacios and
Emily Dallmann collected the two hits for Crown, and
Bailey Harkins pitched a solid game minus a couple of wild pitches.
Alfred University - Crown College was held without a hit through five innings in their second game on Thursday by a top notch Saxon pitcher. Crown got their lone baserunner in the fifth inning on a walk to disrupt the perfect game. On the defensive side, Crown played well, but ran into an offensive juggernaut in the Saxons who hit the ball extremely well in addition to being extremely effective in their baserunning. Crown would lose by a final score of 11-0.

Central College - Crown played the Central College Dutch of Iowa on Saturday, last ranked 16th in the NFCA poll taken on March 11th. Crown would lose by a final score of 13-2, but were able to get their bats going collecting six hits on the day. They were led by third baseman
Janelle Williams who went two for two with a walk.
Bailey Harkins pitched in the loss and was hindered by four errors by Crown's defense. Also hurting the Storm were the six base runners left on base.
Marian - Marian jumped off to a 6-0 lead in the first two innings before Crown settled down and got their bats going. Marian would outscore the Storm 3-2 over the final five innings to win 9-2. Crown was able to load the bases giving them plenty of scoring opportunities, but have so far been unable to convert their hits into runs.
Carissa Beers and
Sarah Petkau both pitched in the loss. Crown will get Sunday off before resuming action against the University of Wisconsin La Crosse.
UW - La Crosse - Crown committed ten errors in this game which allowed La Crosse to score 14 runs on only nine hits as Crown fell 14-1 in this game.
Sarah Petkau and
Cassidy Valenzuela continued their strong play each notching a hit as Valenzuela collected the lone RBI off a single in the fourth inning.
Marissa Perales and
Bailey Harkins both pitched in this game that was marred by poor defensive play.
Dubuque - Crown found themselves down 4-0 in the third inning before rallying to score two in the bottom of the third to narrow the score to 4-2. Unfortunately, Crown would get no closer and wind up losing by a final score of 6-2. Crown had three freshmen get hits incluing Valenzuela,
Marissa Becerra, and
Alisha Promis got the three hits for Crown. Petkau pitched seven strong innings but was hurt by four fielding errors.
Edgewood - Crown was up 4-0 in the bottom of the third before Edgewood knocked in two runs to narrow the score to 4-2 in the fourth. Crown would tack on one more in the bottom of four to give themselves a three run cushion. Edgewood would battle back though knocking in three runs in the 6th to tie the score at 5. Crown would get the walk off winner in the bottom of seven though to win 6-5.
Kate McLaughlin knocked in the game winner for Crown who had ten hits on the day. McGlaughlin was 3-3 on the day as
Sofia Palacios had a monster day going 2-4 from the plate with four RBIs and a homerun.
Sarah Petkau collected the win.
Denison - Crown was not able to keep the hot hitting going in the second game of the day only collecting two hits against Denison as they fell 9-1.
Sarah Petkau and
Janelle Williams collected the two hits for Crown who could not find their stroke. Three different girls took the mound for the Storm who severely missed
Cearra Dulaney on the trip for depth in the pitching rotation.
Crown wrapped up their Spring Break trip against Denison and will return home for UMAC conference play opening up on March 30th against the University of Minnesota Morris Cougars.
