St. Bonifacius, Minn. – The Polars hosted Bethany Lutheran on Monday to finish their three-game series, falling 21-5 as the Vikings completed the sweep.
Bethany Lutheran jumped out early, scoring three runs in the first inning and one in the second to take a 4-0 lead. After a scoreless top of the third from Zac Luinstra, Bryan Gerbers launched a deep two-run home run to left field, scoring Caden Esquerra and cutting the deficit to 4-2.
The Vikings responded with a massive fourth inning, plating seven runs to extend their lead to 11-2. In the fifth, Esquerra scored his second run of the game on an RBI groundout by Easton McKenzie. Later in the inning, Tyler Olson drove a hard ground ball past third base for a single, bringing in both Gerbers and TJ Reilly to make it 11-5.
Bethany Lutheran pulled away in the sixth with another big inning and added more in the seventh to secure the 21-5 victory.
Esquerra led the Polars offensively with a three-hit performance, including a double, while scoring twice. Olson also had a strong day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Gerbers went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and scored twice. Reilly added a double, and Carson Sanders recorded a hit.
Charlie Joyce recorded the final two outs of the game, both via strikeout.
The Polars will resume their suspended game against Bethel on Wednesday, picking up in the bottom of the third inning with the Polars trailing 9-3. They will then kick off their final conference series of the season at home against the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
