Superior, WI – The Polars baseball team faced off with the University of Wisconsin Superior in a doubleheader on Saturday and swept the day winning game one 18-10 and game two 5-2.
After the first inning the Yellowjackets took the 2-1 lead. Crown answered with an RBI single from Kyler Thruston and a three run home run from the likes of Bryan Gerbers to take the 5-2 lead. The 4th inning allowed the Polars to tack on five more runs to take the 10-5 lead after a Drew Girtz two run home run and a couple of hits strung together. After a few runs from UW-Superior, Crown opened the game up with a 7 run inning in the top half of the 8th and the Polars finished with the 18-10 win.
Aidan Volk-Specht earned his first win of the season pitching 6.1 innings allowing 6 earned runs and striking out 5 batters. Phillip Jackson pitched the final 2.2 innings and allowed just 2 earned runs. Drew Girtz totaled 4 hits and 3 RBIs leading the Crown offense. Gerbers totaled a whopping 6 RBI's on 3 hits.
Game two started out with Crown pushing across the first run of the game with a Gerbers home run to take the 1-0 lead. The next run wouldn't come until the bottom half of the 5th inning when the Yellowjackets tied it up at 1-1. Tyler Bloom came up clutch knocking one out of the park to dead center to retake the 3-1 lead in the top of the 6th inning. Crown added two insurance runs and came out on top 5-2.
Ryan Vondracek pitched 7 innings allowing just 1 run and struck out 9 batters. Quentin Holmes and Drew Girtz pitched in relief. Tyler Bloom had 3 RBI's on 2 hits in the game. Crown totaled 11 hits as a team.
The Polars improve to 12-10 on the season and 7-2 in UMAC play and will next head on the road for a non-conference doubleheader against Concordia Moorhead on Tuesday, April 8th starting at 2pm.
