St. Bonifacius, Minn. - The Polars baseball team faced off with Martin Luther on Saturday in a doubleheader and came out on top in both games by scores of 11-1 and 13-2.
Crown started off slow in game one as Martin Luther scored the first run off of a sacrifice fly in the 2nd inning. The Knights held the 1-0 lead until Crown put up a crooked number in the home half of the 5th inning. After a couple of singles from
Caleb Yowell and
Louis Garcia the Polars pushed across 7 runs after 2 errors and three more hits to take the 7-1 lead. After a scoreless top half of the 6th inning hits from
Drew Girtz,
Kyler Thruston, and
Bryan Gerbers put Crown ahead 11-1 and the Polars closed out the game winning by that score.
Bryan Gerbers went 3-4 leading the offensive effort. Yowell and Girtz both had 2 hits in the contest.
Ryan Vondracek pitched 6 innings earning the win and allowed just 1 earned run.
Danny Gallardo finished the 7th inning allowing no hits.
Gerbers starting game two with fireworks after a two run home run. The bottom half of the third saw Crown total 6 hits and score 6 runs to take the 8-0 lead. The Knights scored 2 runs in the top of the 5th but Crown answered with 4 of their own to take the 13-2 victory after 7 innings of play.
Gerbers totaled 4 hits in game two and three runs batted in.
Julian Encinas tabbed 2 RBI's himself.
Kyler Thruston and
Ethan Habetler both had two hits games.
Aidan Volk-Specht pitched 5 innings and allowed just 2 earned runs for his 3rd win of the season.
Brett Torbeck came in to the game in relief pitching 1 inning and
Bryan Gerbers finished the game.
The Polars move to 19-14 on the season and 14-4 in UMAC play and will play their final conference series on the road at Northwestern starting on Friday, May 3rd at 3pm with a UMAC postseason tournament spot on the line.
