Tucson, AZ – The Polars baseball team faced off with Carthage and Rockford again on Thursday and fell by scores of 19-4 and 13-11.
Crown gained the lead in game one in the 2
nd inning after a
Tyler Olson double drove in
Ashton Long. Carthage responded back taking the 3-1 lead heading into the 5
th inning. After a balk allowed a Polars run
Bryan Gerbers knocked in two more runs to take the 4-3 lead. The next two innings did not go in the Polars favor as the Firebirds put up a crooked number in the 6
th inning with 13 runs scored. The Polars fell 19-4 in 7 innings.
Crown totaled just 5 hits in the contest and struggled at the plate totaling 16 strikeouts.
Ryan Vondracek pitched 4.2 innings and allowed 5 earned runs, striking out 4 batters.
Jacob Van Dam,
Charlie Joyce, and
Caleb Landry all took the mound.
Game two saw Rockford push across two runs in the top of the 1
st inning, but Crown answered with 10 unanswered runs. The offensive explosion was led by
Kyler Thruston who singled and tripled totaling 3 RBI's. Gerbers and
TJ Reilly both also totaled 2 RBI's. From that point forward the tides turned as Rockford slowly chipped away and eventually took the 13-11 lead in the 8
th inning. Crown was unable to regain the lead and dropped the second game of the day.
Aidan Garza, Thruston, and Gerbers all had 3 hits in the game.
Aidan Volk-Specht got the start and pitched well over 6 innings allowing just 2 earned runs and striking out 4 batters.
Quentin Holmes, Phillip Jackson,
Mitchell Cox, and
Cole Vahovick all pitched in the game.
The Polars fall to 3-6 on the season and will next take on Augsburg University and Wesleyan University on Saturday, March 15
th starting at 11am (CST) in their final two games in Tucson, Arizona.
