Baseball Drops Contests to Firebirds and Regents

Tucson, AZ – The Polars baseball team faced off with Carthage and Rockford again on Thursday and fell by scores of 19-4 and 13-11.

Crown gained the lead in game one in the 2nd inning after a Tyler Olson double drove in Ashton Long. Carthage responded back taking the 3-1 lead heading into the 5th inning. After a balk allowed a Polars run Bryan Gerbers knocked in two more runs to take the 4-3 lead. The next two innings did not go in the Polars favor as the Firebirds put up a crooked number in the 6th inning with 13 runs scored. The Polars fell 19-4 in 7 innings.

Crown totaled just 5 hits in the contest and struggled at the plate totaling 16 strikeouts. Ryan Vondracek pitched 4.2 innings and allowed 5 earned runs, striking out 4 batters. Jacob Van Dam, Charlie Joyce, and Caleb Landry all took the mound.

Game two saw Rockford push across two runs in the top of the 1st inning, but Crown answered with 10 unanswered runs. The offensive explosion was led by Kyler Thruston who singled and tripled totaling 3 RBI's. Gerbers and TJ Reilly both also totaled 2 RBI's. From that point forward the tides turned as Rockford slowly chipped away and eventually took the 13-11 lead in the 8th inning. Crown was unable to regain the lead and dropped the second game of the day.

Aidan Garza, Thruston, and Gerbers all had 3 hits in the game. Aidan Volk-Specht got the start and pitched well over 6 innings allowing just 2 earned runs and striking out 4 batters. Quentin Holmes, Phillip Jackson, Mitchell Cox, and Cole Vahovick all pitched in the game.

The Polars fall to 3-6 on the season and will next take on Augsburg University and Wesleyan University on Saturday, March 15th starting at 11am (CST) in their final two games in Tucson, Arizona.
