Tucson, AZ - The Polars baseball team faced off with the Wesleyan University Cardinals on Monday and came out on top 13-11.
Both teams knocked in one run in the first inning and the Cardinals tacked on three more in the second inning to take a 4-1 lead. A
Drew Girtz single in the second drove in
Ethan Habetler to cut the lead to 4-2. After a one run 3rd from Wesleyan the Polars scored 7 unanswered runs as
Ashton Long hit a solo home run in the 3rd to get the scoring started. Girtz doubled driving in one,
Caleb Yowell hit a sacrifice fly to knock one in,
Kyler Thruston had an RBI single, and
Bryan Gerbers capped it off with a two run blast to take the 9-5 lead.
Wesleyan once again battled back tying the score up and forcing the Polars to go to the bullpen.
Jacob Van Dam started the game and pitched 6.2 innings allowing 11 hits and striking out 5 batters.
Danny Gallardo finished out the top of the 7th and the score was set at 9-9. Girtz, Gerbers, and
Tyler Bloom rallied to drive in 4 runs and out Crown ahead 13-9. The Cardinals threatened in the 9th scoring two runs, but the Polars closed it out with the likes of Girtz on the mound.
Girtz totaled 4 hits and 3 RBI's in 5 at bats to cap a spectular day at the plate. Gerbers and Bloom both had 3 RBI days with 2 hits each.
Quentin Holmes pitched 1 inning out of the bullpen allowing one hit.
The Polars move to 3-2 on the season and will have two contests tomorrow as Crown takes on Rockford and Carthage Tuesday, March 11th at 3pm and 6:30pm (CST).
