St. Paul, Minn. - The Polars baseball team battled with Northwestern on Friday evening and came out on top 6-5.
After a quick first two innings Crown reached home plate first with two runs after a
Tyler Olson single,
Howie Hatton double, and a
Bryan Gerbers single. The Polars held the 2-0 lead until the top of the 8th inning when the Eagles scored 4 runs on 4 hits. The 4-2 Northwestern lead was short lived as Crown took the lead back on back to back hits from
Tyler Bloom and
Matthew Shaugabay and an RBI single from
Drew Girtz giving the Polars the slight 5-4 edge.Â
Despite the lead change the Eagles answered right back in the 9th inning tying the score at 5-5. The top of the 9th inning started off with a
Howie Hatton triple on a ball that was smoked out into left center field. After two intentional walks
Charlie Joyce earned the walk off on an infield single giving the Polars the 6-5 victory.
Hatton went 3-5 on the day leading the offensive attack. Gerbers, Bloom, and Olson all had multi-hit efforts. Shaugabay led the team with 2 RBI's.
Tristan Camp pitched an excellent 7.2 innings just allowing 2 earned runs and scattering 7 hits while striking out 8 batters.
Aidan Volk-Specht pitched an inning and
Drew Girtz earned the win with 1 inning pitched and 3 strikeouts.Â
The Polars move to 17-16 on the season and 14-5 in UMAC play. Crown moves into 2nd place in the UMAC standings and will play the final doubleheader of the regular season tomorrow starting at 1pm.
