St. Bonifacius, MN - The Polars baseball team faced of with the Bethany Lutheran Vikings on Saturday in a doubleheader and lost both by scores of 17-8 and 11-10.
Game one saw the Vikings bats heat up in the first few innings as the VIkings took at 8-1 lead heading into the bottom half of the 3rd inning. Crown scored their first two runs on an error and a wild pitch. A
Mason Brock home run cut the lead to 8-3 heading into the 4th inning. The Vikings added one run then Crown found one of their own on an
Ashton Long home run. Following a four run 5th inning from Bethany Lutheran Crown scored 3 runs on a
Howie Hatton double and
Bryan Gerbers single. A four run 9th inning gave the Vikings the 17-8 win.
Jefferson Barmoy took the loss in the first contest as
Liam Jones,
Danny Gallardo, and
Charlie Joyce all pitched. Hatton led the offensive effort with 3 hits and 2 RBI's. Brock hit two home runs in the contest.
The first at bat from Brock in the second game he hit his third home run to lead off for Crown. After three innings of play Crown held a 1-0 lead. The Vikings scored 2 runs in the top of the 4th inning to take their first lead of game two. A
Tyler Bloom double, wild pitch, and a
Caleb Yowell single pushed Crown ahead 4-2 after 4 innings. The Vikings evened the score at 4-4 after 6 innings of play. The battle ensued from there as Crown scored 5 combines runs in the 7th and 8th innings after a Gerbers double and a bases clearing triple from Hatton.
The Polars held the 9-7 lead in the top of the 9th and the Vikings started a late rally. With 1 out in the top half of the 9th inning, four straight hits brought the score to 9-8 as the Polars made a pitching change. Two home runs from the Vikings silenced the crowd as they took the lead 11-9. Gerbers hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the 9th and Crown got two runners on base, but the Polars lost 11-10.
