St. Bonifacius, MN - The Polars Women's Basketball team faced off with the Bethany Lutheran College Vikings on Saturday and fell in overtime 84-79.
An early 8-2 run to start the game favored the Vikings before Crown battled right back and took the 12-11 lead for the first time with 4 minutes remaining in the first quarter. A few late buckets from Bethany Lutheran gave them the lead at the end o the quarter 18-13. Crown managed to get out to a five point lead after buckets from
Mya Morris,
McKenzie Latzke, and
Sydney Cotten to start the second quarter. The Polars maintained the lead at the end of the half 36-32.
The third quarter produced a number of lead changes starting with 6:45 to play in the third when the Vikings went out in front by seven, 45-38. Crown proceded to go on a seven point run tying things back up at 45. A three pointer from Latzke and a bucket from Bethany Lutheran flipped the lead twice with the Vikings having a one point edge at the end of the quarter. The Polars proceded to go on a 19-7 run to give Crown an eleven point lead with just 4 minutes to play.
A couple of buckets from the Vikings brought the score to within three and then one with 1:39 on the clock. With under twenty seconds left Latzke knocked down three free throws and gave Crown a 75-71 lead with 17 seconds left to play. A quick basket from Bethany Lutheran, and then a foul sent Latzke to the free throw line. She knocked down one to extend the lead to 76-73 with six seconds remaining. As time expired the Vikings drilled a 23 foot three to tie the score and send it to overtime. On back to back nights the overtime period saw the Polars opponents outscore Crown and the Polars fell 84-79.
Four Polars scored double digits in the contest.
Mya Morris scored 17 points, Latzke scored 16 points, Cotten scored 12 points, and
Hazel Serapio scored 11 points.
Isabelle Sager finished the night with 15 rebounds. Latzke also totaled 4 assists. As a team Crown shot 38.6% from the field and 29.6% from three point range.
Crown falls to 2-13 on the season and 1-4 in UMAC play and will return home to face off with Northwestern and North Central next Friday, January 19th and Saturday, January 20th.
