St. Bonifacius, MN - Homecoming Saturday was in full function as the Polars faced off with the Westminster Blue Jays and came out victorious by a score of 25-17.
The first drive of the game saw the Blue Jays drive down the field and take eight minutes off the clock after the Polars got the fourth down stop. The seventh play of the Polars first drive Polars quarterback
Diego Narezo found
Michael Downs up the seam for a 45 yard touchdown. After a few plays late in the first quarter the unexpected happened. A regional power outage affecting multiple townships around St. Bonifacius halted the game. For the majority of the contest from then until late in the fourth quarter the game was played without power.
The next points early in the second quarter would come from the Blue Jays on a 26 yard touchdown pass and after a failed 2 point attempt the Polars were still out in front 7-6. After a possession battle Westminster scored the final points of the first half with a field goal as the Blue Jays finished the half out in front 9-7.
Crown started out the second half in a hurry with Narezo throwing two touchdown passes in a span of 3 minutes, one to
Jonathan Wamsley and one to
Terry Warner. With 11 minutes to play in the third quarter a 97 yard interception return for a touchdown put the score at 20-17 as Crown held the lead. A
Brock Knick field goal and a safety would put the icing on the cake as Crown defeated Westminster 25-17 for their first win this season.
Narezo finished 17-31 on the day with 3 touchdowns and four interceptions.
Jonathan Wamsley was the leading rusher with 37 yards on the ground. Downs, Warner, and Wamsley all finished with a receiving touchdown. Seneca led the receiving corps with 89 yards.
Defensively
Junior Doe and
Jamoriyon Stephenson both totaled 8 tackles.
Gabe Banks also added 7 tackles.
Isaac Herron totaled 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in an impressive effort. The Polars Defense totaled 4 forced fumbles as
Kevin Lewis and
Jared Pardee both recovered one. Lewis also had two pass breakups in the game. The Polars kicker
Brock Knick went 1 for 2 on field goals.
Polars football moves to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in UMAC play and will travel to Roseville, Minnesota to take on the Northwestern Eagles on Saturday, October 7th at 2pm.
