St. Bonifacius, MN - The Polars football team faced off with the Simspon College Storm on Saturday in the home opener for Crown and fell 48-46.
Crown started out the game about as fast as they could after an early interception from freshman defensive back
Kevin Lewis the Polars scored on the first offensive play on an 80 touchdown pass from
Diego Narezo to
Terry Warner. The following possession the Polars defense got a stop and forced a punt.
Rudy Criner would then take the punt return 88 yards for a touchdown to give Crown an early 13-0 lead. Simpson would answer with a touchdown of their own to move the score to 13-7. Nine plays later Crown plunged into the end zone with a handoff to
Jonathan Wamsley. The passing attack was the main source of offense all game as Narezo connected with both
Isaiah Anfield and Warner again before the half ended and the score sat at 33-21 to end the first half.
The Polars would get the ball right back at the beginning of the second half and march right down the field in 5 plays as Narezo ran it in this time on a 14 yard scramble for a touchdown. The Simpson offense came to play in the second half score four unanswered touchdowns eating up about 15 minutes of the game clock giving Simpson the lead for the first time in the game 48-40. With under a minute to go the Polars offense struck it big once again as Narezo found Wamsley for a 66 yard touchdown pass up the middle of the field cutting the score to 48-46. The Polars failed to convert the two point conversion to tie up the game and it would all ride on an onside kick. The Polars kickoff team recovered the onside kick but the play would be called back after a penalty called on the Polars, the second attempt was unsuccesful. A couple of kneels from Simpson and the final score read 48-46 in Simpson's favor.
Narezo led the passing attack with a career passing day going 27-47 for 459 yards passing. He also totaled 4 passing touchdowns and 1 rushing touchdown. Wamsley led the ground game with 6 carries for 51 yards and a touchdown for an average of 8.5 yards per carry. Warner totaled 10 catches for 252 yards and 2 touchdowns leading the Polars receivers. Wamsley finished with 6 catches for 94 yards and a receiving score. Anfield had 4 catches for 42 yards and a touchdown as well.
Criner led the Crown defense with 17 total tackles with 13 of them being unassisted and had 2.5 tackles for loss.
Gabe Banks finished with 13 tackles on the day and 1 tackle for loss. Freshman
Kevin Lewis recorded his first career interception.
The Polars fall to 0-2 on the season and look to notch their first win on the road this week at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota for a 1pm kickoff on Saturday, September 16th.
