Dubuque, Iowa - The Crown College Polars Women's Basketball team faced off with the Oak Hills Christian Wolfpack on Wednesday in the NCCAA North regional tournament coming out on top 80-73.
Crown jumped out to an early lead going on a red hot 24-5 run to start the games before giving up two buckets at the end of the first quarter. The Polars knocked down 6 combined three's from Madi Hecox, McKenzie Latzke, and Raelin Smalley in the first quarter. Crown extended their lead to 30-15 with 6:22 to go in the second quarter after Shauna Thompson scored back to back buckets. An 11-2 run from Oak Hills to end the half cut the Polars lead to just ten with the score sitting at 38-28.
The third quarter saw Crown struggle offensively only scoring 8 points in the quarter. Only Hecox and Isabelle Sager scored baskets in the third with the score at 46-39 Crown in the lead to end the quarter. The Polars women fought to keep the lead in the fourth but the Wolfpack kept cutting into the deficit tying the game up at 54 apiece with 4:13 to go. Two free throws from the Wolfpack and a missed last second jumper from Amy Martius left the game tied at 58 to end regulation.
Oak Hills took the lead in the first Overtime period and held it for most of the five minutes. A layup by Thompson with 21 seconds to go tied it up once again this time at 64 and that would end the first Overtime. Crown took over in the second overtime period behind the likes of Melanie Delestrez's 6 points to end the period and two baskets from Hecox. The Polars finished with 16 points in the second overtime taking down the Wolfpack 80-73.
Madi Hecox notched a Double Double for Crown leading the way in points and rebounds with 28 points and 13 rebounds. McKenzie Latzke and Shauna Thompson both scored double digits with 17 and 16 points respectively.
Melanie Delestrez tabbed double digit rebounds with 10 followed by 7 rebounds each from Amy Martius and Hayla Flowers. Hecox also dished out 4 assists to add to the huge statistical day.
The Polars as a team shot 33.7% going 29-86 from the field and 32.4% from three point range shooting 11-34. Crown scored 20 second chance points and 32 points off the bench.
The Polars women will stay in Dubuque, Iowa for the NCCAA North Regional semifinal game with their opponent to be determined. This game will be played on Friday, March 3rd at 5pm with the winner headed to the North regional final.
