St. Bonifacius, MN - The Polars Volleyball team battled with the Knights at home and fell in five sets 3-2.
The Knights started the first set with a 12-4 run, but the Polars stormed back winning 6 straight points. Crown cut the lead to two three more times in the set with the score at 22-18 the Knights ran off a three point run to finish the first set 25-18. An exciting second set saw ten lead changes but this time the Polars finished well winning six points compared to three from the Knights to take the second set 25-23 and even up the match at 1 set each.
Set three was all Knights as Martin Luther rattled off to a 15-5 lead before finishing the set 25-12. Yet again Crown answered the call in the fourth set as kills from
Alyssa Heagney and
Aryanna Puetz led the way to a 17-10 lead. A late Martin Luther run was snuffed out as Crown finished the set 25-16 to even the match back at 2 sets each and the Polars would play in their first five set match of the year. An early push from Crown in the fifth set saw the Polars edge out in front 8-4 but the Knights battled the set to even up the score at 12-12. A clutch tip kill from Heagney and an error from the Knights left the door open for Crown as match point ensued with Crown up 14-12. The Knights went to their offensive firepower and scored back to back points to counter. A kill from
Jocelynn Shockley going cross court gave Crown the lead once again, but the Knights answered the call scoring three straight and Martin Luther came out on top 17-15.
Heagney led the offensive charge with 12 kills on the night followed shortly behind by Shockley who had 11 kills.
Shaelyn McNeill and
Kamber Brown both finished with 13 assists in the contest. Defensively
Maggie Claussen totaled 26 digs and Heagney totaled 17.Â
Maggie Claussen continues a dynamic first year effort and surpassed the single season digs record of 371 set in 2018 by Madeline Svoboda. Claussen currently sits at 383 digs with seven matches remaining on the season.
Aryanna Puetz also set a season record of her own as she surpassed the single season solo blocks record of 17 by Naomi Anderson in 2008 with 19 solo blocks on the year with seven matches remaining.
The Polars fall to 2-20 on the season and will return home tomorrow night for a 7pm contest with UM-Morris.
