Baseball Cruises Past Northland with Double-Header Sweep

St. Bonifacius, Minn. – Due to terrible field conditions in northern Wisconsin, Northland College traveled to Crown for a UMAC double-header on Saturday.  Even though Crown played as the visitors, they were able to dispatch the Lumberjacks after seven innings in each game, winning 12-2 in the opener and 14-4 in game two.

The first game featured a familiar power display from Crown, with Mason Brock, Ashton Long, Seth Betts, and Kyle Schroedle all going deep.  The Storm also got the job done on the basepaths, stealing ten bags over seven innings, led by four from Betts.

Tyler VanCise earned the win with a nine-strikeout performance over five innings.  The big right-hander allowed two runs on just two hits, with five walks to earn his second win of the season.  Caleb Keen allowed two hits over two scoreless innings to finish the game, striking out two.

The offense was led by a 4-5 performance from Ashton Long who doubled along with his home run, and knocked in four.  The big day raised his season average to a ridiculous .465 with nine extra base hits.

Betts reached base four times and scored four runs to go with his four stolen bases.

Game two was another powerhouse performance from the red-hot Storm.  Only one ball flew over the fence, courtesy of Alejandro Molina, but Crown rolled up a triple and four doubles among eleven hits and eight walks, and stole nine more bases (including five more for Betts).

Jacob Shirley gave up four runs over five innings to earn the win, punching out nine Northland hitters along the way and Jacob Van Dam struck out three over two perfect innings to finish things off.

Molina was one of two players, joining Jack Becker and Tristan Shoemaker, to record two hits and led the team with four RBI.  Bailey Sarto crossed the plate three times to lead Crown in that category.

The Storm travel to Carleton for a double-header on Monday, before embarking on another long run of UMAC games.
