Hancock, Mich. – The Crown football team put together a complete performance en route to a 40-14 win on the road over Finlandia on Saturday. The Polars got a record receiving day from
Terry Warner, scored a pair of defensive touchdowns, and outgained the Lions 494-243 for a convincing win.
Both units played extremely well on the day as Crown threw for 459 yards and held Finlandia to just 43 rushing yards on 40 attempts, barely more than a yard per carry.
Diego Narezo rebounded from a tough performance a week ago to throw for 442 yards on 26-49 passing with four touchdowns and two interceptions.
His favorite target on this day was Warner, who gained a new single-game record 260 yards on just nine receptions with three touchdowns.
Crown got things rolling on just the second play from scrimmage as Narezo found Warner for a 64 yard score and the Polars were off and running.
Finlandia got a great kick return and phenomenal field position and answered right back, taking a 7-6 lead after scoring on their third play of the game and it looked like we might be in for a shootout.
That storyline was not to be, however, as Crown's defense didn't allow another score until the 6:07 mark of the fourth quarter.
Crown built a 20-7 lead at the half thanks to a
Dametre Forshee 13-yard interception return and a 32 yard strike from Narezo to Warner just 30 seconds before halftime.
The Polars would push that lead to 34-7 after another long touchdown pass from Narezo to Warner, this time for 63 yards, in the third quarter, and another pick-six for the defense, this time a 52 yard score from
Gabe Banks.
After the Lions got a consolation score in the fourth, Crown finished off the game with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Narezo to
Isaiah Anfield.
Banks led a strong defensive effort with eleven tackles and the big interception return.
Donovan Cochrane also had double-digit stops with ten, and
Quis Icon had nine tackles including two sacks.
Rudy Criner added an interception, giving Crown three takeaways for the game.
Crown moves to 2-1 in UMAC play, with a home matchup against Greenville this coming Saturday. That game is set for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
