ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. --- Sophomore guard
Shauna Thompson hit a go-ahead layup with 1.6 seconds remaining to win a close contest with the Mount Mary Blue Angels 63-62 on Saturday. Thompson's late bucket pushed her total to 20 points, her career-high. The game was close from wire to wire with 19 lead changes.
"I love playing for my team," said Thompson, elated after victory. "Shout out to my coaches, the players, I did it for you."
First-year guard
Amy Martius led the game in scoring with a career-high 24 points, starting the game a blistering 10/11 from the field following up her 7/7 shooting performance against the Northland Lumberjills that earned her Crown Athlete of the Week.
"It was a lot of teamwork and making sure we executed on what we said we'd do," said Martius. "Especially [shorthanded], it was kind of hard getting a break and breather."
With a rotation of only six players, the Storm expertly navigated foul trouble and came back from down eight in the second half. This meant larger roles for several Storm players including sophomore
Katie Archer, who tied a career-high with seven points and added ten rebounds (the first time with more than four boards in her career).
Senior point guard
Stevey De La Ossa nearly set a school record with a career-high nine assists in the contest along with scoring six points. Fellow senior Patrica Gibson added six points on 60% shooting, seven rebounds, four steals and a block in great all-around performance for the post. Sophomore
Thiery Zachary added two rebounds and two assists for the Storm.
The Storm's shooting performance in the game included a remarkable 50% from three-point range and 47% from the field. The Storm stay at home for a contest on Wednesday against the UW-Superior Yellowjackets.
