Storm's Commanding Sweep Puts Team Back in Playoff Contention

ROSEVILLE, Minn. --- Crown Baseball swept the Northland Jumberjacks on Sunday afternoon, with a tight 9-8 win and a blowout 18-1 victory to retake sole possession of the #5 spot in the UMAC standings.

In game one, the Storm fell behind 5-1 by the top of the fifth inning but came back with a huge inning of their own to retake the lead. The scoring started when Chad Herrera hit a double that cleared the bases, scoring Seth Betts, Derek Albers, and Kyle Schroedle. Bailey Sarto then singled to score Herrera, and Brooks Repking hit a sacrifice fly to score Gideon Dunn to take a 6-5 Storm lead. By the end of the eighth, the Storm had added three runs, two of which came from RBI singles from the bat of Herrera, who had five RBIs of the Storm's nine runs. Crown held onto the lead from there, taking the contest 9-8.

In game one it was senior Dunn who started the first contest for the Storm, his first game pitching of the season. He struck out three in 3.2 innings. Nicholas Schroedle relieved Dunn, and pitched five innings with only two earned runs. He received the win and is now 3-3 during the year. Eric Newman came in to receive the save, recording the last out of the contest, Newman's first save of the year.

In game two, the Storm went from a playing the Lumberjacks close to a dominating performance. By the end of the third inning, Crown had a 12-0 lead, which they extended to 18-1 by the end of the contest. Senior Kress Medina led the team with three RBIs. Seniors Brooks Repking and Camden Wiens (along with Dylan O'Neil) led the team with three hits apiece. All four seniors (Repking, Wiens, Medina, and Dunn) recorded a hit in the second game of Senior Day.

It was the first-year pitcher Rico Avila that pitched a complete game in the second contest, going seven innings with one earned run and striking out three. Avila did not allow a walk in the contest; this was Avila's first win of his collegiate career.

Up next for the Storm is their last UMAC doubleheader of the year, as they head to New Ulm for a matchup with the Martin Luther Knights, who currently sit ninth in the conference. If the Storm advance to the UMAC Playoffs, the games would be held on May 9-May 11.
