Defense Shines in Win Over Maranatha Baptist

WATERTOWN, Minn. --- Crown Men's Basketball won their second consecutive game on Saturday over the Maranatha Baptist Sabercats, 74-63. The Storm end their non-conference season with a 6-3 record, the best non-conference record in the Crown NCAA era. The Storm were down at halftime, but adjusted well on the road, outscoring the Sabercats by 14 in the second period.

Unsurprisingly, junior Timothy Wendel was the high-point man in the contest for the Storm, with 18 points, just below his season average coming into the game of 23 ppg. The junior forward also led the team with three blocks in the game, and four steals, along with pulling down eleven boards for his tenth double-double of the season. Junior Gunnar Ledin also scored in double figures, with twelve points in the game. Seniors Josh Volness and Keegan Oyugi had nine and eight points respectively, and Oyugi led the Storm with six assists. Off the bench, senior Logan Strand had eight points and sophomore Christian Moore had seven points and seven rebounds. D'Andre Caster nearly had his season-high rebounding the ball, with eight in the contest.

The Storm did not shoot the ball well in the game, with only 36.8% of their shots from the floor scoring, and only 25% of their three-point attempts scoring as well. The Storm made only eight three-point attempts in the game, four in each half. However, despite being well below their averages, a solid Storm defensive plan and well executed second-half adjustments held the Sabercats to under 30% from the field.

The Storm head back to UMAC play for the rest of the season, starting with a matchup at the University of Northwestern Eagles, a team they bested in their second game of the conference season by 14 points. The Storm are Northwestern's lone UMAC loss so far this year. After that matchup on Wednesday, Crown returns home on Saturday with a matchup against rival North Central, a black-out game for the return home from their three-game road trip.
