Roseville, Minn. — Crown baseball was swept on Friday as they continued their UMAC season playing an away game against Northland at the University of Northwestern's turf field. Crown held close in game one, eventually falling 3-4 to the Lumberjacks, but lost in the second game by a wider margin, 7-13, after Crown allowed a nine-run eighth inning for NC.
In game one, Crown took an early one-run lead when a
Brooks Repking single scored catcher
Seth Betts, who reached first on a walk and stole second to advance into scoring position in the first inning. Northland took the lead in the bottom of the third inning 2-1, but pitcher
Gideon Dunn homered to tie the game at two apiece in the top of the fifth. Crown then retook the lead in the sixth inning when a sacrifice fly scored
Connor Buchanan. However, in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lumberjacks scored two runs to regain the lead and held it for the rest of the game. Senior
Gideon Dunn pitched seven innings and allowed all four Northland runs, and
Sydney Ness came in for one inning of relief allowing no runs, only a single hit and striking out the side.
In game two, Crown once again started with the lead in the top of the second when a
Jason Sroufe single scored
Tanner Stoel and
Connor Buchanan. Sroufe scored himself after a Northland error, and Crown took an early 3-0 lead. Northland answered with three runs of their own to tie the game, and in the third inning, both
Gideon Dunn and
Brooks Repking scored on wild pitches, retaking the Crown lead 5-3. In the fifth, Repking scored on a Buchanan single to lead NC 6-4, and in the top of the eighth, Crown added another run as
Tanner Stoel scored on a
Seth Betts sacrifice fly. Crown led at that point 7-4, but a nine-run eighth inning, as the Lumberjacks were able to hit well against relievers
JT Adams and
Levi Knott, spoiled Crown's lead. Starter
Tanner Pruett struck out nine in six innings of work, allowing four runs despite only allowing four hits.
