St. Peter, Minn. — Crown and UM-Morris played a doubleheader on the turf field of Gustavus on Thursday. Crown held a 5-0 lead up until the bottom of the ninth inning when the Cougars scored six to steal game one. In game two, a disheartened Crown allowed nine runs in the first two innings, falling 2-14 to Morris.
In game one,
Brooks Repking scored catcher
Seth Betts in the first inning for an early 1-0 lead. The game quieted down from there, with the next runs by either team coming on a fifth-inning double by pitcher
Gideon Dunn, with Betts once again finding home plate. In the seventh,
Levi Knott scored on a wild pitch and pushed the lead to 3-0. In the eighth, a double by
Hunter Orozco scored
Brandt Hubert and
Tanner Stoel to increase the lead to five, with Dunn having eight innings of shutout pitching. However, in the bottom of the ninth, Dunn allowed two runs on three straight hits and
Sydney Ness came in to attempt to save the game. He quickly got a groundout but allowed a run to score on a single after a walk. After another walk,
JT Adams came in with a one-run lead. He walked a batter, but then got the second out of the inning, a strikeout. Unfortunately, he followed the K up with hitting the next batter, which with the bases loaded, tied the game. With a tie game lead and the bases loaded, Adams allowed a single by a Cougar pinch-hitter, capping the Morris comeback.
In game two, Morris' success continued, with nine runs early on pitcher
Tanner Pruett (only six earned). Crown added two runs in the top of the ninth, but it was too little too late as they fell 2-14.
Levi Knott led the team in game two with three hits. Crown hopes to regain their momentum as they continue UMAC play in the coming games.
