New Ulm, Minn. — Crown women's basketball team couldn't take the season sweep of Martin Luther on Wednesday evening, falling to the Knights of New Ulm, 62-70. Crown's earlier victory in the first half of the season over MLC was Crown's first ever against the Knights, and they couldn't squeeze out a second in the same season.
Senior Desiree Davis led the team in scoring for the thirteenth game in a row. Davis scored 18 points, and also had a team-high seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals as her Crown career nears an end. Sophomore Damonyka Roberts reached double digits for the second time this season with eleven points, going a perfect 5/5 from the field; she also added five rebounds. Roberts also had a block and a steal. Fellow sophomore Stevey De La Ossa scored eight points in the game. Senior Andrea Besa scored seven points, making two of her three field goal attempts and had three steals in the game. Junior Kayla Carter was also incredibly efficient making three of her four shot attempts for six points in the game. Senior Madison Stricklin added two more blocks to her impressive total (second-most in the NCAA-era history of Crown.)
Crown outshot the Knights 43% to 36% from the field and 44% to 29% from three-point range. However, the big difference came in turnovers and free throw shooting. Crown had roughly half the free throw attempts of Martin Luther (19 to 36), and Crown turned the ball over twelve more times (13 to 25) than the Knights.
Crown may have been a bit demoralized after finding out yesterday that they were mathematically eliminated from the UMAC Playoff picture, though they should be proud of their season thus far, with a Crown women's basketball record win total (and reaching double-digit wins for the first time). The Crown women have one more home game, against St. Scholastica on Saturday in St. Bonifacius.
