Ashland, Wis. — In possibly the most heartbreaking loss of the season, Crown fell to the Northland Lumberjacks on Saturday 62-63. It doesn't matter how much time you led the game because after Crown's first basket made in the first minute of the game, the game was never tied and Crown was never losing. However, down two with time winding down, Northland's Brandon Galland hit a game-winning deep three-pointer that left .1 seconds on the clock, the Lumberjacks first and only lead of the game.
Senior Austin VanDerHeyden led Crown with 17 points and seven boards in the game. Sophomore Tim Wendel scored well below his career average with 12 points but was able to secure eight rebounds in the game. Senior Trey Peace had another game in double figures with 11 points in the match and an impressive five assists. First-year Christian Moore was a rebound and a single point away from a double-double, with nine in both categories. Logan Strand made the most of his playing time with seven points in his limited time on the court.
Junior Josh Volness did not attempt a three in the game, his first game all season where he did not record a three-pointer attempt, and this game was only his second of the season where he didn't make at least one. The last time he didn't take a shot from range was against Whitworth in Washington over a year ago.
With this loss, Crown drops to 2-3 in UMAC play as they continue to fight with fellow 2-3 teams (Northland and North Central) for the five seed in the UMAC Playoffs. Crown faces the UMAC's current top team Bethany Lutheran at home in St. Bonifacius Wednesday.
