St. Bonifacius, Minn. — Senior guard Desiree Davis was able to get her 1,000th point tonight in the second quarter against UMAC rival Martin Luther. Only three points away as the game started and having an early basket, she remained one point shy for about a quarter, accumulating assists, but no points. Right before halftime, she was able to find the back of the net on a shot, and the game paused for a brief moment of celebration. Davis is the second member of the Crown women's basketball 1,000 point club, joining
Judy Mundt. Davis also leads Crown women's basketball history in rebounds, assists, and steals.
Not only did Davis get her 1,000th point, but she followed it up with 19 more, scoring 22 in the game as she helped Crown find a way to win their third UMAC game of the season and re-enter the playoff picture as they chase St. Scholastica for the five-seed in the playoffs. Davis also led the team with ten assists and eight rebounds, only two boards away from her first triple-double of the season.
Davis wasn't the only Storm player to score 20+ points in the game, with junior Kayla Carter close behind. Carter had 21 points on 9/15 from the field. Stevey De La Ossa added six points of her own, and Madison Stricklin had eight rebounds in the game which Crown led throughout. Remarkably, almost half of Martin Luther's scoring came in the final quarter, where they scored 26 of their 60 points as they attempted to come back late. However, their comeback attempt was to no avail with Crown handling their pressure defense and scoring enough to remain ahead of the Knights.
Crown shot an impressive five of eight from downtown, with three made three-pointers from Davis and one each from Andrea Besa and Brooke Honeck. Crown's 47% shooting from the field and 63% from beyond the arc bested Martin Luther's 33% shooting percentage from the field and 17% three-point percentage. Crown made more three-pointers (5) than Martin Luther (4) on 16 fewer attempts.
Crown improves their UMAC record to 3-5 and has a small break until Northwestern travels to St. Bonifacius next Wednesday.
