St. Bonifacius, Minn. — It was senior night at the Wild Athletic Center and after Coach
Luke Herbert honored the seven seniors before the game, he started a lineup featuring all seniors for the first time all season. In addition to regular starters,
Garrett Bigej and
James Brown,
Tom Messner,
Jose Silva, and
Jordan Whitcomb filled the starting lineup.
Unfortunately for the Storm, they couldn't end the senior night in the winning column, despite a hard fought game where they led in the last ten minutes, Superior pulled away at the end and Crown fell to the Yellow Jackets 77-94.
Junior
Austin VanDerHeyden scored 22 points and had nine boards and four assists, though he struggled from an efficiency standpoint only shooting 9-22. Senior
James Brown had a big night with 15 points, including three made threes. Brown also grabbed six boards, had two assists, a block and a steal with an impressive zero turnovers. Sophomore
Josh Volness scored 14 points on only five shot attempts, largely due to the fact that he was 8/8 from the free throw line.
An interesting note from this game was that the two freshman from South America, Crown's
Timothy Wendel (Uruguay) and Superior's Rafael Monteiro (Brazil) went head to head for the second time. Both freshman are leading scorers for their respective teams throughout the season. Wendel scored 13 tonight, with six boards, two assists and a block. Monteiro had 17 points, 12 rebounds, fie assists ,two blocks and a steal.
Crown's last game of the season is Saturday evening at 5 pm against the College of St. Scholastica.
