St. Paul, Minn. – the Crown football team opened their 2016 campaign with a 29-9 loss to the Hamline University Pipers on the road Saturday. The Storm trailed 20-3 at the half and played the pipers even in the second half, save for an extra point attempt that was blocked and returned for two points.

Chad Anenson first half field goal and
Matt Michaud 3
rd quarter touchdown run accounted for Crown's scoring, the latter of which briefly pulled the Storm to within 20-9.
Taylor Watkins got the nod under center for the Storm and threw for 202 yards and three interceptions in his first career start, also carrying nine times for 19 yards.
Josh Edlund recorded seven carries for 23 yards while Michaud chewed up 27 yards on three carries.
Thomas Andrews led the receiving corps with eight catches for 86 yards while
Trey Peace and
Terrell Thomas each had four grabs for 85 and 29 yards respectively.
Josh Brozek led the defense with 14 tackles, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup, while
Joe Duffy and
Alex Banks each had a tackle for loss.
Nathan MacGilfrey stood out on special teams, averaging 45.8 yards over four punts, with two kicks of 50+ yards and two punts downed inside the 20.
The Storm return home next weekend when they host Northwestern under the lights for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Saturday.
