St. Bonifacius, Minn. – The Crown football team hosted the University of Northwestern in their 2016 home opener on Saturday, losing by a final of 21-0. The Storm were able to move the ball in the middle of the field, but struggled to finish off drives in losing the Eagles.
The Storm defense was solid, using a couple of timely takeaways to keep the UNW offense in check.
Dasean Riley had a red zone interception and Tyler Bird forced and recovered a fumble on the goal line for a touchback to keep Crown within striking distance.
A pair of interceptions and a fumble interrupted three drives and Crown just couldn't find the finishing touches to put points on the board.
Taylor Watkins threw for 111 yards with two interceptions, while
Josh Edlund led the team with 28 rushing yards and 46 receiving yards.
Byrd finished with four tackles for loss while
Josh Brozek recorded nine tackles and four pass breakups.
The Storm head out on the road next weekend to face Martin Luther in another UMAC clash.
