Baseball: Cougars Sweep Storm

Morris, Minn. – The Crown baseball team's goal of making the UMAC postseason tournament for the first time took a hit on Wednesday as the team was swept in a conference doubleheader by the Minnesota Morris Cougars.  Crown lost game one by a 9-2 margin and dropped the second game 9-4.  Five Storm errors led to four unearned runs on the afternoon, and Crown's bats couldn't come up with an answer in either game.

Gideon Dunn took the loss in game one, giving up six runs (three earned) in 5.2 innings of work.  The offense was led by two hits from Daryl Taylor, while a two RBI triple from Harry Ballantyne scored David Sherwood and Hunter Foss for Crown's only runs of the game.

Game two saw Crown jump out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second when Kress Medina doubled home David Cruz and Dunn.  The freshman shortstop then scored on a Foss single to stake Crown to the early advantage.

The Cougars would strike back in a major way in the bottom of the frame, however, scoring six times to take a three run lead.  The home team would tack on three more in the third to take a 9-3 lead.  Josh Flanders would come on to scatter five hits over 5.1 innings of scoreless relief, but Crown couldn't mount a comeback, with Luke Meyer's RBI single in the sixth providing the only bright spot in the later innings.

The Storm now sit at 2-4 in UMAC play, tied with Morris and Bethany Lutheran, two full games behind fourth place Northland College for the final playoff spot.

Crown will take on 6-2 UW-Superior this Saturday at home in a bid to work their way back into the playoff picture.
