Storm Sweep Three Game Series with Sabercats

By Ben Brecht

Waconia, Minn. -  After a three game skid against Northwestern, Crown baseball was looking to get back in the winning column with a three game series with Maranatha Baptist University.  Crown would get that bump taking all three games from the Sabercats and getting back to .500 now with 10 wins and 10 losses.

Game 1

Tanner Pruett (4-2) got the start for Crown and he did a great job of putting Crown back on the winning track. He pitched six innings, striking out eight and only giving up two runs while facing 27 batters.  Crown got the bats going early and kept it going throughout the game. Crown got on the board in the first inning with two runs coming in on errors. Maranatha countered the scoring in the second inning off of a single and a wild pitch. With the game tied at two, Pruett settled in with his pitches and Crown went on a tear offensively, scoring in every inning. Crown's scoring came from some great hitting and also some costly errors by the Sabercats. Crown also scored a couple of times when the bases were loaded and the batter was walked.

Gideon Dunn finished with three hits and two RBIs, and David Cruz also chipped in with two hits and two RBIs. Maranatha Baptist had six errors and walked eight Crown batters to aid in the win.

Game 2

After getting back the win column the night before, Crown was looking to complete the sweep of Maranatha Baptist on Saturday. With Gideon Dunn on the mound for the first game, Crown got off to another quick start in the first with four hits in the first inning bringing in two runs. Crown ran into a little trouble in the third inning where they had three errors, and Dunn walked a couple a batters which helped to give Maranatha a 3-2 lead. Crown countered in the bottom of the third with two runs to retake the lead 4-3. Crown added a couple more runs in the fourth inning extending the lead to 6-3. Gideon Dunn settled back in after the rough third inning, and Crown's offense led to a final 7-3 victory. Ryan Denison went 4 for 4 in the game to lead Crown at the plate.

Game 3

In the second game, Crown looked to get the sweep of Maranatha Baptist College and get back to a .500 record at 10-10. David Cruz started but was relieved after two innings by Alex Smothers.  Both pitchers struggled with their control hitting nine batters, throwing four wild pitches and issuing five walks through five innings.  Because of the pitching struggles, Maranatha was able to put up four runs in three innings. Crown was able to respond at the bottom of each inning, each time to tie the game.  Crown would add another two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead 6-4.  Smothers was relieved by Seth Herdle in the sixth inning.  Maranatha would respond in the top of the sixth inning scoring two run to tie the game up at 6-6.  In the bottom of the sixth, Travis Walker drove in two runs to give Crown the 8-6 lead which proved the difference.  Seth Herdle finished out the seventh inning to give Crown the win. Crown had nine hits, and Maranatha had six errors.
