Crown Baseball Spring Trip Update

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 As the Crown baseball team travels to sunny Florida this spring, follow along here for updates on the games and recaps of the action.  Box scores will be made available as we receive them.

Maine-Farmington

The Storm took on the Beavers of Maine-Farmington in their first action of the trip, losing both games of a double-header.

UMF used 16 hits and four Crown errors to build an 11-0 lead through five innings in game one, but couldn't close the door on the Storm.  Crown responed with six runs in the top of sixth, but a six run sixth for the home team sealed Crown's fate.  The Storm were able to add three more in the top of the seventh, but the final score would read 17-9.  Daryl Taylor and David Cruz both collected three hits, with eight different players notching hits for the Storm.

Game two against the Beavers would see the Storm jump out to a 1-0 lead before a six-run third inning propelled UMF in front.  Crown would pull to within 6-3 after a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, but insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings helped the Beavers to a final score of 8-4.  Harry Ballantyne went 3-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI to lead Crown.

D'Youville

Wednesday was a wild one for the Storm as they combined with D'Youville to score 36 runs over the two games of thier double-header.  Crown won both games, to improve to 2-2 on their trip.

Game one was the definition of a back and forth affair as the Storm and Spartans traded the lead back and forth for almost the entire game.  The two teams went to extra innings tied at eight, before Daryl Taylor brought home Hunter Foss for the 9-8 walk-off win.  Tanner Pruett earned his second win of the season in relief, tossing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, and Harry Ballantyne and Foss each collected three hits.

Game two would prove to be just as exciting, with the Spartans jumping out to a 6-0 lead after a six-run bottom of the fourth inning.  Starter Josh Flanders would settle down and finish the game, allowing eight runs total with four earned and recording four strikeouts.  Flanders would earn the complete game win thanks to a ten run sixth inning from the offense.  In that frame alone, eight different players reached base, three different pinch runners crossed the plate, and Harry Ballantyne and Kress Medina each had bases clearing triples.  The final score of game two was 11-8 in favor of the Storm.

Lawrence

After a rainout forced Crown into a Saturday doubleheader with Lawrence University, the Storm dropped both games, losing 10-5 and 10-6.

Game one saw Lawrence jump out to a 4-0 lead, only to see the gap closed to 6-5 after the teams combined for five runs in the fourth inning.  Lawrence would score twice each in the top of the sixth and seventh innings, shutting down the Crown bats the rest of the way for the 10-5 victory.  Five pitchers combined to strike out six for the Storm, while Matthew Tate and Daryl Taylor led the way at the plate, each collecting three hits.

Game two was a mirror image of the game one, with Crown jumping out to the early lead with four runs in the top of the first inning.  Tate and Kress Medina each knocked in two in the frame, staking Crown to the early advantage.  Lawrence would retaliate, however, scoring five in both the third and fourth innings, thanks in large part to nine walks and five hit batters.  Crown mounted a comeback, scoring twice in the top of seventh, but couldn't get any closer as the game finished 10-6.  Tate, Medina, Ballantyne, and Parker Lippold each collected two hits to lead the offense.

Keuka

The Wolfpack of Keuka got to starter Josh Flanders early in game one of the final doubleheader of the trip, scoring eight times in the first two frames and cruising to an 8-0 victory.  Crown's offense was held to six hits, with all of those coming from the 1-4 batters in the lineup.  Ballantyne led the way with a pair of base hits.

Game two was a much better watch for fans of the Storm.  David Cruz put Crown ahead with an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth, but the Wolfpack scored twice in the next half inning to take a 2-1 lead.  Solid pitching and defense was the order of the game, as the score would stay at 2-1, sending Crown back north on a sour note.
Gideon Dunn and Tanner Pruett combined to throw seven innings allowing just five hits, but the Crown bats couldn't make up the difference.  Lippold and Medina each singled twice for Crown in the loss.
