Marshalltown, Iowa – The baseball team traveled to Marshalltown on Saturday for a doubleheader against Millikin University, falling in both games by mercy rule against a tough opponent.
Game 1
Bryan Gerbers continued to raise his RBI total with a single that scored Caden Esquerra in the top of the first inning. Millikin responded with a huge bottom of the second, scoring 10 runs to take a 10-1 lead. Gerbers drove in another run in the third on a sacrifice fly, but two more big innings from the Big Blue in the third and fourth put the game out of reach as they went on to win 20-2.
Michael Escalante pitched the fifth and sixth innings, allowing just two hits and no runs while striking out five. Gerbers finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Game 2
Gerbers stayed hot as the Polars jumped out to an early lead on a three-run home run. Millikin again answered in a big way, scoring 11 runs between the second and third innings. The Big Blue eventually built a 16-3 lead before Andrew Moulton scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh, bringing the final score to 16-4.
Gerbers not only added three RBIs on his home run, but also pitched the final two outs for the Polars, striking out one and allowing no runs.
The Polars will conclude their season on Monday, May 4 at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota at 2:30 p.m.
