Box Score Morris, Minn. - Crown College kicked off the 2015-2016 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference season this Saturday against the University of Minnesota Morris Cougars. Crown took a four point lead at half before falling behind by as many as eight with under three minutes to go. The Storm charged back, using a late three and two free throws from
Seth Moan to force overtime.
The Cougars opened the extra period on a 9-0 run before the Storm found their legs, with Moan once again leading the charge. The junior scored 8 of Crown's 11 points in overtime, but the visitors simply couldn't make up the difference, falling 109-105.
Crown shot 42.7% from the floor compared to 58.8% for the Cougars. Crown shot an astounding 85% from the free throw line, but the Cougars had 42 free throw attempts to Crown's 20. Crown won the rebounding battle and collected 17 offensive rebounds in a stellar performance on the glass. Crown did have 30 fouls to Morris' 21 fouls and the costly foul outs of
Austin VanDerHeyden and
James Brown in regulation.
Crown was led by the outstanding performance of Moan who had 40 points on 13-25 shooting from the floor with five steals. The junior transfer scored just four points in the first half, but scored 26 of Crown's final 38 points, nearly willing the team to a come from behind victory in both regulation and overtime. The 40 points is a new single game record in the NCAA era, besting the mark of 38 set by Anthony Di Loreto against Bethany Lutheran in 2013. His 25 field goal attempts were also a single game record, with his 13 made field goals tying Crown's mark in that category.
VanDerHeyden finished with 23 points and 15 rebounds and went 10-21 from the floor.
Josh Volness and Brown also hit double-digits with 19 and 12 respectively.
Crown will look to shake off the loss as they travel to Northwestern and North Central this coming weekend for more UMAC action.
