Volleyball Wins Conference Opener in Five Sets

Minneapolis, Minn. – The Crown volleyball team has developed a flair for the dramatic recently, winning each of their past two matches the hard way, in five sets.  Crown defeated North Central on the road Friday night, needing a fifth set to halt the Rams comeback bid and move to 1-0 to start UMAC play.

Crown seemed to be in control early, winning the first two sets, albeit by narrow margins, before the Rams came charging back taking the third and fourth sets.  Unlike Crown's five set win over Trinity, their opponents had the momentum heading into the final set.

Crown used two mini-runs in the fifth set, stringing together four straight points on two occasions behind the serves of Miranda Brueggeman and Taylor Urcuyo, to build a 10-3 lead and coast to the 15-7 final set victory.  Those runs were keyed by three kills from Kirby Beers and an ace apiece for Brueggeman and Urcuyo.

Crown was led by a huge double-double from Brueggeman who recorded a team best 21 digs and 16 kills.  Beers had 12 kills and hit a whopping .296 on a very efficient night and Katie Herrmann joined the duo in double-digits with 11 kills.

Brittany Gamer had a big night, getting 41 assists and 11 digs for her own double-double, while Urcuyo, Kelsey Roschen, and Sam Brueggeman also reached 10+ digs.

Saturday should be a tough day for the Storm as they play conference matches at Northwestern and home against Minnesota Morris.
