Crown Volleyball Grabs Two Wins

St. Bonifacius, Minn. – With all the events on campus this weekend, the Storm volleyball team took the cake, playing three matches between Friday night and Saturday morning.  The team had a big day on Friday, getting wins over Finlandia and Northland, before falling to St. Scholastica on Saturday.

The Storm got contributions from everyone on the roster on Friday, playing a fresh lineup against non-conference opponent Finlandia.  Playing without many of the normal starters, several reserves stepped up in the 3-1 victory.  Michaela Svoboda donned the libero jersey and recorded 18 digs, while Kailee Mamula had a team leading 6 kills and 10 assists while also contributing 14 digs.  After dropping the first set, Crown came back to win the next three by identical 25-16 scores.

Game two found many familiar faces back in the lineup to take on UMAC foe Northland College.  Fully rested, the Crown regulars needed every bit of stored energy to repel the Lumber Jills in five sets.

Katie Herrmann had her best day of the season attacking, swinging her way to 14 kills on .270 hitting.  Brittany Gamer recorded a double-double with 22 assists and 12 digs, while Taylor Urcuyo had 27 digs.   Miranda Brueggeman had nine kills with no errors and also added 13 digs.

Crown hit .159 as a team while holding Northland to a .080 percentage, thanks in part to six blocks.  Coach Danielle Hall pushed all the right buttons on this night, getting a huge boost from substitutes Haily Unferdorfer and  Mamula.  Unferdorfer had four kills and three blocks while Mamula had seven kills on the night.

The wins moved the Storm to 4-12 overall and 2-4 in the UMAC.

Crown couldn't keep that momentum rolling on Saturday, falling to St. Scholastica 3-0.

Herrmann had another nice game, hitting double digits with 10 kills and Urcuyo had 19 more digs in the loss.

Crown will continue play on Tuesday when they travel to Minnesota Morris for a triangular with the Cougars and the Presentation College Saints.
