St. Bonifacius, Minn. – The Crown volleyball team hosted their final weekend of home competition and dropped a tough decision to North Central in five sets before being swept by Northwestern. The Storm now sit at 2-10 in the UMAC and are tied with the Rams for sixth in the conference with one weekend to play.
Friday night saw Crown host the North Central Rams in a near repeat of their matchup earlier this season. After dropping the first set, Crown rallied to take the second and third sets, bringing momentum squarely to their side.
The Rams rallied in the fourth, taking the set 25-16 in commanding fashion, setting up a second consecutive fifth set.
The fifth set was about as even as you can get, with the two teams tied at 13-13 before a near miss on an attack from
Katie Herrmann gave North Central a chance to serve for the match. Ashley Kelzer came through with her 17
th kill of the match to seal it for the Rams.
Herrmann led the way with 11 kills on the night, but no other hitter could break into double-digits and Crown hit just .077 (40 kills, 26 errors) for the match.
Taylor Urcuyo had 28 digs while
Miranda Brueggeman added 18 digs to go with nine kills. Setter
Brittany Gamer had 20 assists to go along with seven kills and six digs.
On Saturday, the Storm hosted conference leading Northwestern in their final home game of the season. The Eagles allowed Crown to score into the teens in just one set, cruising to the 3-0 victory.
Katie Hinkle led Crown with five kills in the match.
Crown will wrap up their 2014 season with a pair of UMAC matches on the road next weekend.
