Kansas City, MO — Crown women's soccer opened the season on the road with a strong 2-1 victory over Spurgeon College, using a late second-half goal to secure the win.
The Polars struck first in the closing minutes of the opening half when veteran Layla Kerr found the back of the net off an assist from freshman Eva Starkey, giving Crown an early 1-0 advantage. Spurgeon answered just before halftime, tying the match at 1-1 and sending both teams into the break even.
In the second half, Starkey continued to make an immediate impact in her collegiate debut. The Mankato, Minnesota native scored in the 72nd minute, putting the Polars back in front for good.
Crown held strong defensively over the final stretch to preserve the lead and start the season in the win column with a 2-1 victory over Spurgeon. The Polars begin the year 1-0 and will look to build on the momentum from their season-opening road win.
Women's soccer will stay in Kansas City to face Randall University tomorrow and 10am.
