St. Bonifacius, Minn. - The Polars finished UMAC play on Senior Day in a doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets on Saturday. Superior got the best of the Polars, winning both games to complete the series sweep.
Game 1
Blake Lowrey got the start in game one and limited the damage early. He struck out five in four innings and gave up five earned runs. After falling behind 7-0, an Easton McKenzie double scored Michael Escalante and Blayke Reyburn. Later in the inning, an RBI single by Tyler Hakes brought the Polars within four runs. The Yellowjackets tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth and held the Polars scoreless in the bottom half to secure the 8-3 victory.
Jackson Phillipp was strong in relief for the Polars, giving up just one earned run and holding the Yellowjackets to two total runs over the final five innings. He struck out three in his five innings of work, allowing just three hits and no walks. Blake Morgan went 2-for-4 with two hard-hit singles off the fence in right field. Reyburn, Escalante, McKenzie, Hakes, and Tyler Shamrock all collected hits. McKenzie doubled, scored a run, and added an RBI, while Hakes also drove in a run.
Game 2
Zac Luinstra started for the Polars and cruised through three scoreless innings to begin the game. After three innings without scoring, Superior broke through for five runs in the fourth. They added four more in the fifth and one in the sixth. The Polars offense was held scoreless as they were defeated 10-0 in seven innings.
Luinstra struck out four in four innings of work. Michael Escalante went 2-for-3 with a hard-hit double to left-center field. Zach Adams, Blake Morgan, and Tyler Shamrock also collected hits in the game.
This concludes the Polars' conference season, and they will not make the playoffs. They have four more scheduled games, the first being their final home game of the year against St. Olaf on Tuesday, April 28.
