New Ulm, Minn. - The baseball team completed a three-game series sweep of Martin Luther on Sunday, scoring six runs in the ninth inning to secure an 11-10 comeback victory.
Bryan Gerbers gave the Polars an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly. After two scoreless innings from starter Zac Luinstra, Crown added two more in the third on a two-RBI double from shortstop Caden Esquerra.
Martin Luther responded with two runs in the third, then added one in the fourth, one in the fifth, and three in the sixth while holding the Polars scoreless to take a 7-3 lead. Trailing 7-3 in the eighth, Logan O'Connor drove in Tyler Olson and Gerbers with a single to cut the deficit to two.
The Knights answered with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to 10-5 heading into the ninth. The Polars opened the inning with back-to-back singles from Carrick Burke and Aidan Garza, followed by an error that allowed Esquerra to reach and load the bases. Gerbers was then hit by a pitch to bring in a run, and TJ Reilly followed with a sacrifice fly. Olson delivered a two-RBI double to pull Crown within one.
Easton McKenzie tied the game with an RBI single later in the inning. After stealing second to move into scoring position, McKenzie came home on an RBI single from Blayke Reyburn to give the Polars their first lead since the third inning.
Broc Carter closed the door in the bottom half, tossing a scoreless inning with two strikeouts to earn the save.
Burke led the offense, going 3-for-5 with a run scored. Garza, Olson, McKenzie, and O'Connor each recorded two hits as five Polars finished with multi-hit games. Gerbers drove in two runs and scored twice, while Olson added two RBIs and two runs scored.
Luinstra struck out six over 5.1 innings of work. Sam Sigurdson picked up the win after recording the final out of the eighth inning, and Carter earned the save.
With the win, the Polars improve to 4-2 in UMAC play after the series sweep of Martin Luther. Crown is currently scheduled to host Northwestern on Friday and Saturday, weather permitting.
