Offense Sparks First Win of the Season, Softball Splits in First Day at Gene Cusic Classic

Naples, Florida - The Polars Softball team faced off with St. Joseph's University (Brooklyn) falling 11-10 in the 8am game and took down Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts 14-4 in the second game of the day.

The bats were hot out of the gate for Crown scoring 4 runs in the first inning on hits from Catelyn Garza, Maria Lilienthal, and Itzel Valles. This gave the Polars a 4-1 lead going into the top of the second. The Polars tacked on one more run in the 2nd inning of of an Itzel Valles single. St. Joseph's answered right back scoring 4 runs of their own to tie the game up at 5 apiece in the 4th inning. Singles from Maliya Martinez and Madi Hecox put four more runs on the board and Crown added another in the 5th to take the lead 10-7. A four run sixth from St. Joseph's and Crown couldn't notch one more falling 11-10.

Catelyn Garza totaled three hits in the first game going 3-4. Maria Lilienthal and Itzel Valles both added 2 hits and 2 RBI's. Emmy Romportl pitched 4 innings alowing 6 earned runs on 12 hits. Ashley Earick pitched 3 innings allowing 5 earned runs on 9 hits.

In Game two of the day MCLA scored the first runs of the game getting three runners across in the bottom of the first inning. Crown then exploded offensively scoring 9 runs in the top of the 2nd, 4 runs in the top of the 3rd, and 3 runs in the top of the 4th. A total of 16 runs on 19 hits gave Crown the 16-4 lead as MCLA tacked one run on in the 2nd. The Polars wouldn't look back from there finishing on top 16-5 in five innings.

Three Polars had three hit campaigns with Madi Hecox going 3-4 with 1 RBI, Emmy Romportl went 3-3 scoring three runs, and Alethia Fisher went 3-4 with 1 RBI. Ashley Earick notched 3 RBI's on the day as well.

Abbie Carroll pitched a complete game after 5 innings on the mound allowing 5 earned runs on 9 hits on 76 total pitches.

The Polars Softball team moves to 1-9 on the season and will face off with Alfred State and Wilmington on Monday, March 13th at 8am and 10am.
