Schanbacher Scores, Women's Soccer Loses Heartbreaker 2-1 in UMAC Semifinals

Superior, WI - The Polars Women's Soccer team traveled up north to face off with UW-Superior in the UMAC semifinal matchup and fell 2-1.

The story of the first half was the immaculate defensive effort from the Polars as goalkeeper Rachel Fuller notched 6 saves and Crown was outshot 12-0. Despite the large difference in shots in the first half Crown was able to keep it at a stalemate 0-0. About twelve minutes into the second half the Polars got their first opportunity to shoot and made it count. Following a foul just outside the 18 yard box and left the opportunity for a free kick. The ball in was cleared out to Laura Anderson who sent it in to Ellie Schanbacher and with a touch to the far post the Polars gained the edge on their first shot.

Crown held the 1-0 lead for about twenty minutes but they were unable to fend off the aggressive UW-Superior offense as the score was evened up after a corner kick, awkward bounce, and goal. Just thirty seconds later the Yellowjackets connected again and took the lead for the first time all match with under 13 minutes of play left. The score ended at 2-1 in favor of UW-Superior.

Crown was outshot 26-2 on the evening with Fuller racking up 10 saves. Coming into the contest the Yellowjackets had only dropped one conference game this season. The Polars finished with 6 UMAC wins and 3 ties to pass the 2008 women's soccer team for most points in conference play in program history.
