Men’s Soccer Settles for Draw After Late Penalty

Morris, Minn. – A penalty with just four seconds remaining spoiled what was nearly a come from behind victory for the Polar men's soccer team on Tuesday night.  After trailing by a goal in the first half, Crown scored twice and was seconds away from securing their second consecutive victory before Morris equalized with nearly the last kick of the game.

Crown's first goal came in the 58th minute and was scored by Joaquin Silva after some nice combination play around the top of the area from Tim Jaeger and Juan Fernando Arriaga.  Silva was played through in a tight space and did well to control and go around the keeper before slotting into the open goal.

The score remained knotted at 1-1 until the 83rd minute when Emerson Greseth played a deep corner and Ethan Medina sent the ball back into the box for Jaeger to get the telling touch by Lucas Harmon.

Crown was then tasked with holding out for the final seven minutes and fifty-nine seconds of the match, and nearly was able to accomplish the feat.

After giving away a foul in their own half and delaying the restart, the Cougars had one chance to put a free kick into the box with nine seconds remaining.  With the Crown penalty area packed with nearly every player on the pitch, a mass of bodies hit the ground and the referee pointed to the spot for a Cougar penalty kick.

First half goal scorer Cooper Jones stepped up for the home team and went high down the middle as a diving Leo Roque could do nothing to stop the brutally late goal.

The second draw between the two sides in ten days puts Crown on five points through four games with a record of one win, one loss, and two draws. The Polars are just a single point behind a three way tie for second place early in the conference season.

The team now looks forward to a tough weekend of home matches as the team hosts UW-Superior on Friday and Northland on Saturday.
