Minneapolis, Minn. – After building a 3-1 advantage at halftime, the Polar men's soccer team hung on the secure a 3-2 win after going down to ten men with over thirty minutes remaining in the game. A brace from
Joaquin Silva and a fantastic solo goal from
Tim Jaeger were enough to see Crown earn their first win of the season.
A cagey match throughout, there were more fouls than shots between the two teams, and more cards handed out than shots on target as two familiar opponents battled all afternoon.
Silva got Crown on the board first with a ninth minute strike, but as has been the case so often this season, Crown conceded shortly after scoring with the Rams equalizing just two minutes and twelve seconds later.
The 36
th minute brought Silva's second goal and it was one for the highlight reels.
Juan Fernando Arriaga played Jaeger in behind the Rams defense with the Crown attacker rounding the NCU keeper just outside the edge of the 18. With no angle to shoot Jaeger sent a cross to the back post that Silva nodded back down and into the back of the net to restore Crown's advantage.
Jaeger would go from provider to scorer with less than a minute remaining as Crown's number 20 went on a trademark run, weaving through a trio of Ram's defenders before slotting coolly underneath the on-rushing keeper.
Hopeful to see out an uneventful second half, Coach
Jon Forsythe's side saw those plans unravel when defender
Angel Salinas was sent off for a second yellow card offense in the 53
rd minute.
Playing with 10-men the rest of the way, Crown soaked up pressure well until the Rams were awarded a penalty right on 72 minutes. Goalkeeper
Leo Roque went the right way but wasn't able to get to a well-placed spot kick and the Rams pulled to within one goal.
The hosts continued to look for the leveler until the final whistle. The match ended on an excellent take in traffic by Roque after Crown won the first ball from a dangerous free kick.
The Polars next travel to Minnesota Morris on Tuesday for the reverse fixture from their 1-1 home draw against the Cougars on the 17
th. That match is scheduled for a 4:30 kickoff.
