St. Bonifacius, Minn. – The Crown baseball team hit ten, yes 10, homeruns in their regular season ending double-header against Augsburg on Monday, powering the team to a pair of victories. The Polars won game one 13-9 and prevailed in game two by a 12-9 score.
Game one featured five different players going deep, with
Mason Brock,
Bailey Sarto,
Blake Boggs,
Cody Csulak, and
Seth Betts all leaving the yard.
A two run shot by Sarto and a grand slam from Csulak set the tone for the day as Crown took a 6-0 lead after the first inning.
Augsburg came back with five in the top of the second, and eventually took a 8-7 lead through three.
After Crown tied things up in the bottom of the fourth, Augsburg crept back in front with a run in the top of the sixth to make the score 9-8.
With the games scheduled for seven innings, the Storm had six outs remaining to mount another comeback and they did so with a bang in the bottom of the sixth. After a groundout to start the inning, the next three batters walked to load the bases and Augsburg made a pitching change. Betts greeted the new pitcher by hitting the Polars second grand slam of the day and propelling Crown to an 12-9 lead.
Back to back doubles from
Kyle Schroedle and
Jack Becker tacked on an insurance run and that would be the final, 13-9.
Bryan Bullock earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief and
Dylan Balfour got three outs in the seventh to close the door on game one.
Game two was a similarly high scoring affair, with the Polars opening the game with back-to-back-to-back home runs from Brock, Sarto, and Betts.
Augsburg used a two-run homer to draw closer in the top of the second, but Crown responded with another Brock home run, his third of the day, a two-RBI single from Schroedle, and an RBI groundout from
Tristan Shoemaker to score five in the bottom half of the inning to take a firm grip on the game.
The third inning saw the two teams trade runs as Augsburg got a sac fly and Crown got a solo home run from
Aaron Clogston, making the score 9-3.
Augsburg would hit for home runs over the final three innings, but Crown countered with a
Sean O'Donnell squeeze bunt that scored
Chad Herrera, a passed ball that scored Aidan Hunt, and a Hunt RBI single that scored
Patrick Minchow.
Dylan Balfour got the win, throwing two innings to start the game, while
Tyler Bloom,
Jacob Van Dam,
Danny Gallardo, and
Mason Brock all pitched for the Polars. Brock earned the save despite hitting three batters in the seventh.
All eyes turn toward the UMAC playoffs where Crown will open with a game against Bethany Lutheran on Thursday at 4 p.m. All games of the tournament will be held at the University of Northwestern.
