St. Bonifacius, Minn. – The Crow Women's Soccer team battled against the Eagles of Northwestern on Friday night. The Storm were shorthanded, playing the entire 90 minutes with no substitutes as the team continues to struggle with injuries early in the season. Despite that major hurdle, it took a UNW goal in the last five minutes to propel the visitors to a 2-1 victory.
Northwestern struck first, netting the opening goal after 25 minutes of play. Crown responded nearly immediately with Ashley Pierce equaling the scores after just 47 seconds. Emma Domka assisted on the goal.
After that quick exchange of goals, the game was a stalemate deep into the second half. With Crown tiring, the Eagles took advantage, hitting the crossbar in the 85th minute and scoring less than a minute later. Crown mounted a late charge, with Domka having a chance less than four minutes before full time, but the Eagles hung on for the 2-1 conference win.
Northwestern had the advantage in shots, 13-5, with a smaller 7-4 gap in shots on goal. Molly Schmitz recorded five saves for the Storm.
Crown returns to the pitch tomorrow for a homecoming matchup with North Central. The Storm defeated the Rams earlier this season in a non-conference contest, 3-1. Kickoff for Saturday is set for 7:30 p.m. under the lights at Old National Bank Stadium.
